Hometown: Westchester, NY
Current City: Minneapolis, MN
Occupation: Intimidating elderly for money. Rap rap rap. King Gampo Free

1. What is your primary objective? My primary objective is to locate Sarah Conner, and TERMINATE HER.

2. What separates you from the rest? I think that’s for the listener to decide, but If i had to guess, I woulds say the variety of styles and ranges. Rapping, singing, game spitting, etc.

3. What inspires or motivates you? Anger. Seeing others succeed makes me mad. Fuels the fire. I’ve had a very long, but steady path, and seeing people do it in 2, 3 years… shit, even 5 or 6 years, makes me want to get it even worse. I got a fiery belly when it comes to that shit.

4. What is Hip Hop missing? If you look, its all there.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Headlining national tours. Eating. Still having creative control over everything i do. 12 Kids. 4 Mommas.

Article by Dan DeLuca, Inquirer Music Critic

Adam Yauch, one of the three members of pioneering hip-hop band the Beastie Boys, has died, according to Rolling Stone. Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of salivary gland in 2009, and the band’s excellent return to form on the album Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two, which was released last year, was delayed due to his illness.

Yauch, who rapped under the name MCA alongside his band mates Mike Diamond (Mike D.) and Adam Horowitz (Ad-Rock), also directed many of the band’s videos under the name Nathaniel Hornblower, as wells as the band’s 2006 concert film Awesome: I F—in’ Shot That and the 2008 high school basketball documentary Gunnin’ For That Number One Spot. He was also deeply involved in organizing the series of Tibetan Freedom Concert and as avowed Buddhist.

The Beastie Boys are perhaps still most strongly identified with their 9 million selling 1986 album License To Ill and its hit “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party),” but they are revered in the hip-hop community for the deeper contribitions stretching over a decades long career, highlighted by their sample-heavy 1989 masterwork Paul’s Boutique.

By Brian Ball of I Shoot Reno

It’s not too often that early 2000′s Grammy-nominated west coast rapper, Afroman rolls through Reno for a headlining set at The Underground, and upon navigating through the impromptu street fair of concert goers gathering outside, and confirming with security that my camera bag contained no weapons, we were inside.

That being only half the battle and knowing that this packed wall-to-wall club has a bar with a more ‘chill’ behind-the-scenes area which I like to use to setup camera gear before heading up front, we made our way through the entrance, where we were greeted by Dan Hubbard of 775HipHop.com and continued on down the hallway and into the main room, where we met up with another security check. This time for ID. No problem on our part and to the back corner of the club we go for a quick setup.

Ear protection inserted, gear assembled and Kata KT DW-495 strapped to my waist, I make my way past security and through a couple hundred(?) people to find a spot stage right, about ten feet out behind a protruding black wooden box of sorts. Standing alone in the crowd with my lens hanging out did not satisfy my need for photographic domination of the evening. I did notice however, a small pathway between a couple people in front of the box, continuing on top of the box, and on the edge of the stage between a monitor and floor fan guarded only by two or more small children, presumably six or younger.

You know I had to… C’mon, what woud you have done, just sit there in the crowd and take mediocre photos or go for the gold?

Using an unsuspecting young (and thankfully friendly) gentleman’s left shoulder to launch myself up onto the box, then continuing to the edge of the stage where I would perch for the duration of shooting the photos included in this album, I took a leap of faith and in the crowded club followed the “Donnie Darko” and made my way into the opening to secure what was my only chance at capturing a series of shots worthy of posting.

Beyond any heroics on my part and much more importantly, there are three things I learned about Afroman that evening.

1) Afroman wields a wicked, multi-necked axe…

2) Afroman don’t need no stinkin’ DJ, he can do that shit himself, and…

3) Afroman requires three or more 24oz. cans of Colt 45 when performing

This information alone might not be all too impressive, but when combined with a sold-out performance in Reno… ladies and gentlemen, we have liftoff!

When Afroman took the stage, he spent a moment or two setting up his iPod, then five or more minutes unpacking and tuning his gleaming pearl white, multi-necked guitar, the later of which he rocked unbelievable instrumental versions of favorites such as “Because I Got High” and “Crazy Rap” on, with full-on soloing reminiscent of, dare I say it, somewhere between Jimi Hendrix and Muddy Waters. I felt as if I had unknowingly attended a blues concert hosted by that guy from the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back music video. It was pretty much mind-blowing.

One other point of interest that I distinctly recall standing out was the added verse on “Because I Got High”, where Afroman ad-libbed, “Now I’m spending the night in Reno, and I know why-yyy-yyy / Because I got high, because I got high, because I got hi-iii-gh”. I really hope somebody recorded that.

As per the settings dialed in on the Nikon D7000 + AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED camera and lens combination used to shoot this set, I didn’t do a whole lot of knob twiddling. In fact, I did absolutely zero during Afroman’s set, and came out with a series of shots that I’m actually proud to present in a public forum. Fixed settings for shutter speed at 1/200th of a second, a wide open aperture of f/2.8 and boosted ISO at 6400 sealed the deal, with minimal processing taking place in Lightroom 3 before uploading here for your viewing pleasure.

RulDope Records would like to officially announce the signing of Reno singer/songwriter/emcee Chari “Knowledge” Smith. Knowledge has made a name for herself on the hip-hop scene, her live performance sets her apart from other performers as well. “Knowledge is one of the most passionate individuals I have seen. She is extremely talented and her stage presence is what makes you a believer. Her persistence and drive will make her a blueprint for what RulDope wants out of an artist,” says RulDope co-owner Ciera Lagges.

Knowledge Lives Forever has quickly emerged to one of the hottest groups on the west coast. The group combines live instrumentals with melodies and poetic flow from Knowledge at the forefront. With multiple albums under their belts, radio play and press success, Knowledge Lives Forever has become a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop and indie scene.

“I have never seen a group with the explosion of emotion and talent like KLF. They fit so many genres and are so refreshing to music. Think Gym Class Heroes when they first came out meets Red Hot Chili Peppers. Such a unique group that RulDope is so proud to be working with,” says co-owner Sara Rooker.

Wild Things

RulDope Records would like to officially announce the signing of Reno hip-hop crew, Wild Things. Wild Things is made up of four individuals who are redefining the meaning of underground hip-hop. With inspiration from Living Legends to Eyedea, Wild Things put a unique twist on their delivery and performance. Individually, each member brings their own character and style to the group, making Wild Things a group you don’t want to miss out on. “There’s a lot of hip-hop artists out there. A lot who claim to be different and unique. Wild Things takes me back to when I first heard the Lucy Ford album from Atmosphere. I think this is a group people can really get into from the group releases to the solo albums, they’re going to be a big asset to RulDope Records,” says co-owner Haleigh Hoff.
